UX/UI Design: What is It and Why is It Important?

Humm House Art + Design offers a variety of design services, from branding, logo design, print and web design and packaging design. And now, I can offer UX/UI design! But first, what are these different types of design services, and how are they related to one another?

What is UX/UI Design?

There are two parts to UX/UI design: the UX part, which refers to "user-experience," and the UI part, which stands for "user-interface." They often go hand-in-hand, as they are closely related design skills.

User Experience (UX) Design

User Experience Design is the designing the experiences a certain user has when they interact with a product, whether that product is a mobile app, website, office design or children's toy. The goal of UX design is to make the product the most effective for the end-user, that is, to make it easy-to-use, enjoyable and logical.

The core of this type of design is the "U" in UX: the user. Understanding the customer pain points, needs and challenges are important for crafting an effective solution and useful end-product. Have you ever found yourself navigating a clunky, old website that actually makes you mad to be on it? Maybe this is just my own biased user experience, but if the website is not easy-to-use, I'll leave to find another competitor with a better website.

User Interface (UI) Design

User Interface Design focuses more on designing the aesthetics of a product based on the user experience data. This involves the look and feel of a product, like a website or mobile app. UI involves the layout and visual design, including typography, color, buttons, animation and imagery.

In order to be successful, these elements needs to adhere to a seamless user experience, which is why UI and UX are so closely linked. Good user interface design can promote a positive user experience, while fostering an effective user experience can support fundamental user interface design.

UX involves more of the user research, while UI involves taking that research and translating it into a visual design that users can physically interact with.
